Then after installing all the packages, and running "sudo aticonfig --initial", I was able to reboot and have a functional desktop. I downloaded the ati-driver-installer-9-6-x86.x86_64.run from their site and ran it using --buildpkg Ubuntu/9.04 (as it instructs you to do if you select the build package option instead of just straight installing I for one have lost a hell of a lot of respect for the Ubuntu devs after this disaster of a release and it honestly makes me wonder if these releases

Before I could at least get 1024 X 768, but now X starts with jibberish on the screen and it is hard reboot time.
